About Revelstoke Theatre Company

Revelstoke has supported amateur theatrical and musical groups for more than a century, but this most recent inception, the Revelstoke Theatre Company has been a registered society since the fall of 1978 when a group of interested people got together and decided they wanted to make plays. As a group our goal is to provide quality entertainment to local audiences, expose young people to the arts, and learn techniques and skills to improve our craft.

We have provided at least one production annually and some years have produced as many as four shows, including full scale musicals. For a number of  years we performed wherever we could, in places as varied as the Roxy (movie) Theatre, the Revelstoke Community Centre, and various school gymnasiums and other community establishments. We have also had the opportunity to perform in many other community theatre venues and professional performing arts centres throughout the province. We have produced a variety of entertainment including one act plays, dramas, comedies and more than a dozen popular musicals which involve as many as two hundred members of the community.

In 1999 the City of Revelstoke allowed us access to the former ski chalet on Mount Mackenzie (now ski resort) which provided a "home theatre" for about seven years, and during that time, we became members of Theatre BC, the umbrella organization for amateur theatre in the province of BC. We participate in festival competitions with similar groups around the region, leading to adjudication and educational experiences to train our members in all aspects of stage craft. We were originally members of the Okanagan Zone region, and later moved to the Kootenay Zone region, and since we began competitions have won numerous awards for our performances at regional and provincial levels.

Revelstoke Theatre Company is a registered charitable society, governed and administered by an elected Board of Directors and executive committee. We meet as needed to plan our seasons, establish budgets, oversee financials, set dates and manage business and operations of the theatre company. Our season is generally a fall, winter, and then spring (competition) production period. Plays are chosen by committee, when presented by the persons wishing to direct. Auditions or readings are advertised and generally held over two sessions, and the rehearsal process usually runs between six and eight weeks prior to production. This process of course is longer and more involved if a musical is being mounted, as it also involves music and choreography.

Our membership fluctuates from year to year but we are always happy to welcome new members to the group! Training and experience are not necessary, and acting on stage is not mandatory. Many jobs are available back stage, technical, props, costumes, makeup or in production, so if you have ever thought you might be interested in being involved please contact  us!
